Conifer trees

I have 12 conifer trees in my garden all roughly 7ft, can anyone tell me the reason why grass isn't growing properly in this area. Is there a solution apart from having trees chopped down. Someone told me to plant periwinkle under the trees not sure how this will help.

    Hi :)
As well as casting shade from the sun and creating a rain shadow, conifers suck up vast amounts of moisture from the soil around them ... grass in the vicinity of conifers is usually suffering from drought.
