Destruction of crop

The first year I've had a really successful crop of peas (petits pois); after a couple of pickings with plants still laden, I've arrived at the allotment to find them trampled to the ground, most of the crop gone, but some pods looking ripped in half.  Could this be badgers? or some other wild creature?

    Could well be badgers.  A small flock of big fat woodpigeons can also cause a surprising amount of damage.
    A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

    sry bout your peas carol. It's frustrating when all your hard work gets broken. I would always be wary of allotments for so many reasons - kids breaking in. Jealous allotment neighbours or possibly a badger which I had not even thought about. I want to plant something on the outside of my fence soon but it needs to be dog proof, dog pee proof, kid proof and generally safe from getting damaged or picked so I have decided on a nut tree.
