Blackberries

We have always grown loganberries against a north facing wall, with huge success. OH decided to try growing some thornless blackberries against the wall - now in their first year of fruiting, we have lost at least two of the plants, they have turned brown. Does anyone grow both and do blackberries require more water than logans, which is what I suspect is the problem - underwatering?
