@Fairygirl. Thank you for that info.....something to remember in future, yes it wasn't exactly a wet winter here, and I think the Buddlea didn't help. I think some nurturing has to be done!
The whole truth is an instrument that can only be played by an expert.
Give it a good bucketful of water now and at least once a week so it can penetrate down to the deeper roots. Clematis have thick, fleshy roots and need moisture to keep them happy. Rain, at this stage, will not be enough except in monsoon proportions.

@Ericaheather - I'm not sure that your clematis is Josephine. It looks very pale compared to mine. ?? or are they very variable in colour? Mine looks more like @Valley Gardener

That picture was taken after the heavy rains we had. It's normally darker. But you're right very pale this year in comparison to normal. Just to add, it starts as dark a pink in exactly the same way as @Valley Gardener
Weather conditions can affect colours quite a bit on Clematis. Even on the same plant, you get fading if it's very sunny, and flowers also change colour as they age.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
