pruning prunus amanogawa

I planted a new small amanogawa last year.  It is growing well but I need to know if I have to cut off the lower branches that have grown, and just leave the higher branches so as to form the column style tree??

    I had one for about 25 years and generally never pruned off any lower branches.
    Occasionally there was one growing at the wrong angle and I'd trim it off, but the tree seems to naturally grow as a column.
    A lovely tree, but it had to go when I had my drive widened

    I've had several. In the UK I never had to prune apart from removing the odd sucker from the root stock as it aged. In France, the deer ate the lower growth and made a 'browse line'. Although the French specimen had nice flowers and looked ok, it never made a nice column as it had about 1 metre plus of bare trunk! My advice would be not to prune until it gets far too tall for its position.  Mine were 25 feet tall when I had to leave them and still less than a metre wide at the base.
