veg garden record keeping

Do you record what/ how you do things and what harvests you get in the veg/ fruit garden? What info do you store and how?

I have a small spreadsheet on which I record what I grew where, which varieties and if any of them either did particularly well, or failed to germinate. I have a list on the side of seeds I need to buy for next year, either because I've finished a packet or had total germination failure.

In the autumn, I go through all my veg seed packets checking dates (I have a note of how long most seed types can be stored), throw out any that failed or that I didn't enjoy when they succeeded. Then I copy the whole spreadsheet onto next year's sheet, work out next year's plan using rotation principles for what goes where, draw up a shopping list and start seed catalogue browsing - one of my favourite pass times in November  :)

  • I have a very similar spreadsheet, although I'm a bit hit and miss about remembering to fill it in!

I record cultivar, planting date, first harvest date, last harvest date, weight of harvest and then any issues. like pests or diseases or anything I did differently from normal. I love making statistics out of the whole lot in the winter when there's nothing to do outside.

I have a online folder which I record the producer and variety of veg I've grown along with how well they grew, the weather and the yield also a sheet that shows where each veg type was grawn for crop rotation. I don't know how diligent I'll be as the is my first veg growing year. I have already put peas into it with the word DISASTROUS as they have hardly and pea pods on them at all.

Thanks, I've started a spreadsheet. Sorry about the peas @NannaBoo, have they flowered?

bookmonster, yes they flowered but although I watered the and feed to tomato feed we got enough for a meal for my son any myself and that's from 36 plants . The rest of the flower didn't set so will try a different type next year all so the plants didn't do very well. I think it might be down to the very dry weather last year resulting in poor peas but I could be wrong.
