What’s wrong with my Cistus

i have a Cistus that is we established and quite old. This year is doesn’t look very good, it’s flowers are sparse and the bark is spitting and separating from the trunk.

Can anyone suggest what is wrong? And perhaps more importantly what I can do to save it.
