Those that took Penstemon cuttings all did them at roughly the same time - when the flowers had finished and the plants were ready to prune - would that have been around September/October time........? The old jar I used was clean and filled with rain or water butt water, kept in the shade but bought inside when the weather became cooler.  The cuttings had a clean cut at the base, with 2 or 3 leaf nodes although I carefully stripped all the leaves off, just leaving 1 or 2 at the top.  There are web sites that will give you more details @Sammymummy - let us know how you get on.  once the cuttings had a few roots (only roughly 30% of my cuttings were successful), I put them into 3" pots.  By the following Feb/March the roots were coming through the bottom of the pots so I potted them into 5" pots and they into their permanent garden position around April/May time. A long process but very rewarding as you can see from my picture, on page 1

Thank you Guernsey Donkey, I have a penstemon so will try to take some cuttings later this year and post the results.
