I work in a Garden Centre and I think 90% of the people who ask my advice seem to apologise for not being a gardener. It's nothing to be ashamed of, yet they feel embarassed for not knowing much about plants. Please don't give up, enjoy learning and being in your garden. I think everyone who gardens has the same feelings as you about digging up a plant which is not doing well, I empathise with you at feeling sorry for your cherry, but it really does need removing. Apologise to it when you dig it up, I always do to plants I dig out. Look forward to your garden having your touch to it. Happy gardening
A gardener's work is never at an end - (John Evelyn 1620-1706)
Guess the cherry has to go then. Poor thing. I might try to transplant it somewhere else in the back garden and see if it survives.
Thank you, Silver Surfer and Yorkshire Rose for the advice and the kind words. I'm mugging on RHS books (my Latin is pretty good, so that helps already) and discovered a love for Monty Don, but I suspect most of the learning will come from trial and error!
So pleased to discover that the gardening community is full of welcoming and lovely people though!
