Watering vegetables while away

I have several courgettes, sweet corn, and runner beans that are currently in containers but should probably be in the ground. I have been working on clearing a space for them, but I will be going away for a bit next week and won't be able to water them. Alas both of my trustworthy neighbours have just moved away so I don't really have anyone I can ask to do it. Does wick watering work for plants in the ground? Or would it be better to keep them in containers?

Do you know any trustworthy teenagers who would do it for a few quid cash in hand?

I go away quite a lot and things sort of have to take their chance. Some survive, others don’t.

In my previous garden I rigged up a micro irrigation system which worked quite well.

If you have an outdoor tap close to where the veg is you could consider laying a seep hose around the veg and attaching it to a timer which will irrigate for a chosen length of time every day or every other day.

Alternatively you can do as I do now and water really thoroughly several times in the days before you leave. A final mulch or temporarily covering the soil with weed suppressant membrane will help with moisture retention while you’re away.

Alas no teens or tap. I was thinking about trying the buried bottle with holes in it thing as well.
