Solanums are generally trouble-free, but aphids can sometimes be a problem. All parts of the plant are poisonous and can cause discomfort if eaten. Although 'Glasnevin' and other species of solanum can grow quite large, they are well behaved and make wonderful companions for other plants.6 Jun 2013
Although my neighbour may have been ignorant about the plant, as I was too, he only warned me about the possibility of Deadly Nightshade out of concern for my welfare, as he saw me trimming some of its wayward shoots away.
I am grateful to him, as this prompted me to investigate what it actually is. There are children that play in and around the car park unsupervised, and the public (often with dogs) that walk past it every day - I don't want to tend something that could be potentially harmful to anyone.
Thank you, all you lovely gardeners, for your comments and feedback. I feel re-assured now, and will continue to enjoy this very pretty plant.
