Catherine - when you say 'ready planted' what size of container are they in, and how many plants? Sweet peas need lots of room, and lots of food and water to do well. If they're just in little pots or trays, they'll need potted into something bigger

this was great advice, but now I see a grey squirrel cleverly made it to the railing, and I'm not convinced this is a good thing - a magpie came as well at one point - when I had a cylinder of suet stuff hanging down. Not sure what to do... Have added a water bowl for birds to drink from, and just ordered a bath to hang for the birds to bathe. I loved having robins visiting, but they seem to have eased off now the cylinder food has run out as opposed to the suet balls. mm squirrel seems to have run over some of the plants in at least one of my containers, and doesn't seem great hygienically since I want to grow herbs etc on this balcony at times.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
