new leaves shrivelled

I have recently purchased and and planted seven 20 foot hornbeams (frans fontaine) for screening. I watered them well, but possibly not enough and some of the leaves shrivelled and the trees now look a little thin and are not screening well.  My question is - do leaves reappear on the same buds next year or should I prune out the side branches where the leaves budded but never appeared. The branches are all still green.  many thanks.
