Rose (pruning?)

Hi All

A couple of years ago I bought a job lot of 10 roses where apparently the labels had been lost but identified as hydrid T. Obviously a good price. Problem I have is that they grow quite long stems (possibly you might say branches from the main stem) and because the bloom is large they usually hang upside down very near the ground. Hope that makes sense.

Is there anything I can do - my title suggests some kind of unknown (to me) pruning method?

Grateful for any suggestions.

You can hopefully see the broken branch which is something else which occurs more frequently than I have previously experienced.

Could they be climbing HT’s and not the bush type? The bush type do grow long stems but they are usually pretty rigid and hold the blooms up ok.

Soil looks very dry, I suggest giving them a very deep soaking. That could cause the nodding blooms. I give mine a good soak once a week, obviously it depends on the weather and your conditions. This winter, prune them down to around 6" from the soil (do this every winter with HT's). Not sure if you're feeding them but a controlled release rose fertiliser is also good, as roses are hungry plants.

As ever with my problems it is usually down to basic stupidity. They are in a clay soil and I treat them quite rough. ie rarely water them unless absolutely Sahara like conditions and feeding them is a dirty word (primarily through ignorance). Thanks Omori I shall take your advice as it seems pretty obvious. I have other climbing roses and these do not display similar characteristics, but thanks for the suggestion.
