Only used the knife/trowel for the first time today. It's a brilliant too. Loads of weeds in the borders after all the rain (and not being around much since the tool arrived). Getting long rooted weeds out is an absolute dream even when they are very close to plants which are to stay. Just slide it down the side of the weed, quick twist and out they come.
I read this thread and bought a hori hori trowel. It's brilliant. Why have I been using a conventional trowel for all these years when this little tool was out there? It's not only great for weeding. It's good for all border work.

I was using mine yesterday to cut through the roots of blackberries.
Is that just a 'temporary fix' until you get time to dig the root out completely?
No. I used it for removal of fairly young growth. All that remains is small pieces of root. If they regrow I will then use Roundup on them. The serrated edge of the trowel cut through roots about 1/2 inch thick. There isn't much left behind.
Tried one but a bricklayer's or a plasterer's border trowel is cheaper.
Agreed. There are all sorts of alternatives. What piqued my interest was that every one of the gardeners where I first saw it seemed to have one so they didn't see it as a gimmick. I don't have any regrets about buying mine.
