Hazel nuts

There are a fair number of hazel nuts on my shrub (or is it a tree?)
As the squirrels are unlikely to share, I was wondering if nuts ripen after harvesting.
In which case, I'd rescue a few for myself.
In London. Keen but lazy.

    Technically a tree, I think, but looks like a shrub! Hazelnut growing is a huge industry in river valleys near here and they harvest around October using what looks like a giant hoover with a big bag on the end. I have often wondered how they protected them from squirrels - shoot them, probably.

    Yes you can pick them early and ripen in a shed or some such - keep them well aired. We tried that last year with some from our trees, but didn’t leave them long enough so they were still a bit too green, but edible. Just about.

    Thanks @Nollie. They're still white. I like cobnuts when theyre green so , if I get to them first, I'll pick them when they start to get a bit green.
