Bought one today and it's badly pot bound. Would John innes 3 mixed with some ericaceous compost suit for repotting?

Mine get standard multipurpose compost.  It doesn't need ericaceous, although I don't suppose it would do any harm, if that's what you have, and JI alone might be a bit claggy.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

I have MPC, JI 1, 2 and ericaceous so I can use/mix whatever suits best.

they really aren't too fussy but yes what you say in the first post. Easiest and most forgiving plant there is

Sounds like a plan, I'll mix up some grit too so it's not too claggy.
