Sealing the inside of brick planters to protect against damp and frost

I have just finished building brick planters to separate the back garden from the patio area at the rear of our house.

To stop the bricks from absorbing water and crumbling after frosty spells, I have applied a brick sealer to the outside of the planter. What I am now looking for is is something to paint the insides with. It needs to be durable, long lasting and most of all stop the bricks from absorbing water. Initially, I was thinking creosote, however upon reading up I understand that this may leach into the soil and kill the plants within.

Please can anyone advise a paint that I can use on the inside of the planters? Can I use rubberised swimming pool paint?

Any advise would be appreciated? Thanks.

JKAPoole, I paint all the inside of my terracotta tubs and planters with a brick sealant from a DIY store. I would think it would work the same on brick planters as it's really meant for outside brick walls. You could turn a compost bag inside out and line it with one but put some holes in it for drainage.
  • Could you line them with a membrane of sorts? Presumably you want no water to be absorbed into the bricks from the inside. I also wonder if exterior masonry paint would work as an alternative.
