  • Did they put hardcore beneath the slate or just membrane?

Just membrane on the soil, but a heavy duty one as it has lasted at least 7 years
  • I think this person on Saturday puts hardcore down as well, which can only help (but also add to cost.

Not a good picture but only one I can find with slate showing

  • Thanks for posting that :)

Here's a better picture,  if a bit soggy looking it rained last night on my heavy clay soil, of what it could look like with things planted into the membrane ( the last picture was under my apple tree, was actually looking at the Aquilegia 🙂)
Hope this gives you a few ideas.
  • Oh wow... so my plan was to flatten the bottom and get it chipped. Would need a retaining wall running along the length of the garden - nothing big. And then get matching circular scetion of patio, too. Was quote £6400 pre-VAT...! I think that is a LOT. Going to need to think of something else.......

Ouch😮 I would get a couple more quotes first. They can vary hugely.
  • Yes... I think it's a bit over the top.
My gardener (just started getting a guy to cut the grass) costs approx £50 a month so that's over a decade's worth of paying for him!

I'd definitely get at least 2 more quotes, if possible from some people whose whose work you can see locally or a recommendation from someone whose judgment you trust. Apologies if this is stating the obvious, but it's a big decision to make  :)
