When to sow wallflowers?

Dirty HarryDirty Harry Posts: 1,048
I have a couple of packets of seed that I intend to use for planting up with Tulip bulbs in the autumn.

Is now the time to get on it? Monty does it in June I think but the packets and a few other sources I've read say August-September.

I'm suspecting now to ensure strong plants for potting up in October?

Monty did them on GW a few weeks ago, can't remember exactly when. But I duly sowed mine and they came up very quickly... and then a mouse had a party in the seedlings. I've salvaged enough tha the slugs can have a go now 🤣

What kind of compost did you sow them into? Or did you direct sow into the ground?

Just some sieved peat-free compost, either Miracle Gro or New Horizon, in a seed tray in a cold greenhouse. As the mouse made such a mess of it all I moved them outside into a raised bed rather sooner than I would have otherwise.
