What is this?!

i recently moved into a new house and the lawn is covered with these sprouting shoots.  When I dig them up they have thick fibrosis roots shooting out all under the lawn.  Does anyone know what they are? Thanks in advance!

  • It looks like a seedling from a shrub that started to grow in your lawn If the stem feels still and woody it’s more likely

Those look like suckers coming up from a tree or shrub root underneath your lawn.  Any cherry trees nearby as those are the usual culprits?  Physically pulling them up so they tear from the main root rather than cutting them off lessens the chance of them returning.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

I agree with @BobTheGardener prunus (cherry or plum sort of tree) suckers from the roots of a larger tree nearabouts.

  • Yes there is a cherry tree in the garden! Thanks so much! I’ll continue to pull the roots up as much as possible then :-)
