The leaves look like lilac to me. Maybe one that's been cut back really hard, to make it grow all those straight vertical branches
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

Thanks both, we have a similar one in our garden at home, grown from seed as Bougainvillea (but its become clear as it grows larger that it isn't). Need to do some reading up on Lilac now...
