Whats eating the clematis?

It's a new clematis kitty, first year of flowering. The petals are shredded, and I don't know what to put on it - garlic drench? Any thoughts, thanks.

I don't really know but I know that slugs enjoy a nice clematis for dinner.

It might well be earwigs. Apparently you can trap them using a small flower pot stuffed with straw then upended on a stick next door to your clematis. They sleep inside it so you can get out in the morning, grab the pot and dispose of the earwigs according to your conscience.
