Shady area help 🙏

can anyone advise what you would fill this gap with? It was full with a huge Holly bush which we have had to remove due to our daughter. It is quite shady due to the trees surrounding it but does get some sun at the front.
We would love to add some colour and interest as it is mainly green but also want to fill the space as quickly as possible as it's so ugly at the minute!
Any advice gratefully received 👍

I'd make or buy a playhouse for your daughter, could be a nice wooden one or even a wigwam kind of thing - depending on her age of course. It's rather a shame you felt you had to remove the holly bush though, as not much is going to thrive near the conifers. What about something like a hydrangea in a pot or alternatively a bench to sit in the shade when it's hot.

I have an area in my garden which is semi-shaded by aspect and some conifers/cedars and I have some Japanese Laurels (Aucuba Japonica), Rhododendrons and Choisya ternata as shrubs.
The Aucubas are evergreen and dotted with yellow which bring a bright contrast. The Rhododendron flowers in May. The Choisya is usually for a sunny aspect but mine does well in semi-shade, producing fragrant white blooms.
I would also recommend a Japanese Acer (a lime colour would be gorgeous).
As for lower planting, you could try Ferns, Hostas, Geraniums, Astilbes and Spring bulbs.
I’m sure you will receive plenty more suggestions.

I spent so long typing, I missed @Lizzie27 ‘s suggestion. I like the idea of a playhouse or den!

    Do you like the conifers?

I would have taken out the conifers and pruned the holly to a shape.  It might be hiding nasty neighbours or an oil tank though.
  • Morning all! The conifers go all the way round the garden and we love them so they have to stay.
@Lizzie27 we have cleared another area further round for the playhouse 😉 @AuntyRach we have rhododendrons round the other side but I will check out all the other suggestions thank you! I love the sound of an acer, we had one at our last house so I'll look into that definitely.
Thank you all for your suggestions!!
