Clematis mildew

I planted a new Clematis Jackmanii in the Spring.  Any suggestions as how best to prevent mildew from getting worse?

Keep it well watered and mulched. Did it dry out in the pot before you bought it or had a chance to plant it by any chance?  That often causes powdery mildew a bit further down the line.

We kept it watered. Think it’s planted too close to the fence and not getting enough rain.  I will give it more regular water this year until it gets established.  Thanks
