I'd agree with that approach too and add that after removing it you'll need to re-invigorate the soil with plenty of well-rotted garden compost and some manure to provide nutrients and moisture retention for the interesting new plant.

It looks very much like my Chimonanthus (wintersweet). They can take up to 14 years to flower but when they do it's lovely. Google winter sweet in leaf otherwise you'll think I'm borderline crazy... ; )

That's a great suggestion (and not at all crazy!) but after a quick search I can see the leaves of the wintersweet are a different shape to my guy's.
