Aphids and Scale on Chilli plants.

Hello,

I’ve recently started growing some chilli plants on some sunny windowsills and they have grown really well and are fruiting up nicely. Over the weekend i’ve noticed the plants are being invaded by aphids and possibly to a lesser extent some scale insect. I Sprayed each plant thoroughly with a soapy solution and this seemed to work for a couple of days but two days later the problem has reappeared. Should I continue with this regime every few days or am I wasting my time or am I better off going with a more potent shop bought systemic solution. I prefer to be organic but haven’t got the time to be spraying and checking the plants thoroughly like this every other day. Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You're best off not using systemic sprays as they are taken up by the plant and all parts of the plant will contain some of the ingredients that kill the insects. Personally I wouldn't want to be eating that.
Some systemic insecticides say that produce is ok to eat after 7-14 days, I prefer to avoid them altogether on edibles.

You can easily remove the aphids - some water in a bucket with just a FEW drops of detergent (shower gel [without moisturiser] is safer than washing up liquid). Hold the plant upside down and give the whole plant a gentle wiggle in the water. That should sort the aphids, but will need to be repeated if they reappear.

If you have scale insects, best to wipe them off with a cotton bud or something similar.

Neem oil is safe to use on edibles and will likely help with aphids, scale insects are a bit tougher.

  • Thanks for that suggestion although I’d be a bit worried about breaking off the fruit if I upturned the plant , not to mention losing half the potting soil , I’ll give the neem  oil a try in the sprayer however, hopefully it’ll be a bit more effective than plain old soap and water. Fingers crossed.

  • I know Neem oil is often recommended and used by some chilli growers, and it's easy enough to buy online. Personally, I would never use it, and my understanding is that it is not actually legally authorised for use as a pesticide:

When mine got aphids I put them outside in the garden on a few sunny days. Natural predators soon took care of the aphids for me  :)
  • I’ve heard a diluted boiled garlic foliar spray works well on keeping aphids at bay on tomato plants. I wonder if it would work on my chillis. Maybe someone on the boards has had some success with that ! I’m open to all suggestions. Coincidentally I had them outside today as we had some sun for first time in ages. Hopefully if the summer decides to arrive I can do it more often.
  • Just a quick update on the chillis. Two of the plants seem to be now aphid free and in fine health but when I went to pick up a third different variety which is “Apache “ by the container I was shocked to see about 90 percent of the seemingly healthy leaves just fell off the plant like confetti, from hundreds of leaves to about twenty ? Has this happened to anyone before ?
