Neglected hydrangeas

Have just moved and inherited several neglected hydrangeas that have a lot of old dead wood on but also have flower heads forming.  Realise i have missed the correct pruning time and don't want to lose the flowers this year so would it be ok to just cut out the old wood or should i leave well alone until next spring?

If the dead wood has no growth on it then you can prune that out safely now. You can start renovation pruning next spring - taking out a third of old shoots each year.
