Hi, this is my first post so go easy on me. We have just moved and I’m trying to identify this tree, i’m
pretty sure it’s a bay leaf tree but I’ve never seen one this big. Am I correct? If not could someone let me know what it is?

Yes Lauris nobilis ... we think of it as a shrub but they can grow to 20 feet or more so don’t neglect to keep it trimmed 😉

  • Stupid question - can we use the leafs for cooking?

Yes.   We inherited a huge one, about 3m tall and multi stemmed.  I've raised its crown to shoulder height which makes it a lot less heavy and imposing (just means cutting all stems and foliage off the main trunks so they're bare).  I gave some stems away to neighbours and friends to dry for their kitchens but the rest ended up on the compost heap as there was so much.
