The Digitalis Firebird is a new launch to the market this year so nobody will have had it over the winter yet really.  I saw it at Chelsea and it is lovely.  It was also in some local gardens centres.

It is hardy  down to -5c and might suffer if too wet.

Having looked at it, I’m not that keen, the good points, it had very strong stems and short so will take the wind better but it’s quite sparse, I prefer a thicker flower on a foxglove. Another good point, It will self seed. So the seeds will be available soon.

No seeds I'm afraid Lyn, it is a sterile hybrid.
How can you lie there and think of England
When you don't even know who's in the team

  • In that case I will shelve that idea - @punkdoc - it did look lovely and was obviously a favourite at the show, however I like my plants to pay their way - thanks for all the helpful and interesting comments.

Why do they put this info out there😱
That’s two sites  say it self seeds.
    quote
Digitalis x valinii ‘Firebird’ sometimes grows as a short lived perennial, other times this plant is even shorter lived, it can grow as a biennial – when the plant dies after flowering.  I’m told that Digitalis x valinii‘Firebird’ is like other foxgloves, in that it self seeds freely.  So, if you like Digitalis x valinii ‘Firebird’, leave your flowers to die back and allow them to self-seed around your garden.

  • I must admit that I would be inclined to go with the RHS description, but perhaps it would be best to wait until all the publicity from the GW show has died down and look for it early next year.
The Hosta is still a contender for my garden though!

So would I , RHS says it freely seeds.  It’s a bit sparse though don’t you think?
