Rhododendron Surrey Heath - not flowered

  • I planted a Rhododendron in a pot it was supposed to flower in May but it hasn't there are plenty of buds but they haven't opened. Does anyone know why that might have happened and if I can do anything to save it as it's looking a bit sorry for itself . The plant is called Surrey Heath .

  • That looks really unhappy...maybe worth taking it out of the pot to investigate for vine weevil. Presumably it's potted using ericaceous soil.

  • Yes I have used the right soil . I thought it might be drainage or not enough light . I will take it out and see what it looks like . Thanks

It will have suffered last year in a pot with the very dry, hot weather. Hard to keep them hydrated when they need it for bud formation, which is in  late summer.
Have you got it in shade? I'd keep it in a shady spot if it's not. If it's dry, thoroughly hydrate by submerging in water, and then keep it damp, but not soaking. The roots also need air, so good drainage is important.
It should recover well enough. Make sure you refresh the top layer of soil each year too, so that it has enough nutrients.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
