Can anyone give me a name for this plant that has popped up in our wild lawn area.  I have not seen it growing here before.  Thanks.

    Yes, that's it, thanks Obelixx.  Nothing rare about this plant - I do like the vibrant blue colour, and the bees like it too which is the whole point of this little patch.

    I'm sorry to disagree with @Obelixx but I grew up surrounded by  Echium vulgare and they have smaller flowers and more of them around the spike and a rosette of leaves at the bottom.

    * since saying this I have changed my mind and I think Obelixx is right. It doesn't look exactly like the ones I knew though, seems to have more bell like flowers and not be so robust. Maybe it's another cultivar.

    There are various types of Echium, we also grow the tall version pictured below.This one is also called Echium, Vipers Burgloss isn't it? We grew it last year - could the seed have spread to another part of the garden.  I can't see any similarity in this and the one I have posted today apart from the colour.

    Yes I think that's the reason it's a little different. There is also one on the rhs called 'blue bedder' flowers are more bell like.

    Thank you Bijdezee, that could be what we have in the ID picture - they are all fairly similar apart from the tall echium that is already well established in our garden.

    I have now discovered one white flowering echium close by.
