I believe I may have a yellow jacket nest..

These are the best photos I could take at a distance. They are nesting right by a fence. I've just googled yellow jacket and I'm pretty sure they are. Reading up on them I'm rather nervous.. Is it best to get a professional in? Can anyone recommend one in the Birmingham area?

I’ve never heard the term “yellow jackets” before so I looked it up.

Do you live in North America?

Judging by the name you give them and a search of their markings I think you may have this species of wasp in your garden.

Had you been in UK I would have suggested that you contact your local council who would come and remove the nest for you.

However, wasps are beneficial insects and help to keep the garden clear of caterpillars and so on. They are not usually aggressive unless provoked. I have several nests in my garden each summer, sometimes in my garden shed, and have never been stung.
No I live in the UK. I didn't know they were called something different over here. My council, according to their website, only remove wasp nests between 1st July and sometime in November.

The problem I have with this nest is its a few feet from the seating area in the garden. There are a lot of cats in my area and I worry about them too. Also, I'm growing veg around their nest, which makes harvesting things a bit of a worry atm :(

Dummy wasp nests, hung from a tree, are supposed to be good at encouraging real wasps to move at least 10 yards away. But if you’re talking about dispersing French protestors the fake nests are rubbish.

Just look online for a pest control company (or several)in your area and get a quote for a wasp nest removal.

If you leave them alone they shouldn't bother you. They are amazing predators and eat lots of pests. I have to be careful around wasps as I suffer from severe anaphylaxis if stung. I have had wasp nests in my garden and I have a cat and we have never been stung yet in my garden. The last time I got stung was at the Shrewsbury Flower Show.
