Hi All, can someone help following our destruction of an old compost heap ..some strange plant appeared a couple of years ago...it has lived through harsh winters and is now 4ft tall, no body knows what it is ....i shall take photos and post very soon

    Euphorbia lathyris. It tends to selfseed around. If removing it be careful not to get the white sap on your skin as if can cause sensitivity and burns especially when the skin is exposed to the sun.

    So is it just a weed or am i on the brink of a great discovery?

    It's not a weed as such, read this then decide if you want to keep it  :)
    As Dove says, watch out for the sap.

    but they way it grows is something special, growing equally as gets taller no flower or fruit just a thing of interest .......hopefully like a triffid it wont bite me or go for a walk

    I love looking at them too, so if it's somewhere that doesn’t get in the way then leave it.  Just don’t let the seeds ripen too much. Those pointy shaped things at the top are the seed pods so I would remove them before they pop.  It has flowered, but the flowers are very small so you don’t really notice them.

    Thanks Helix, actually it is in a remote spot away from anything at the back of the garden backing onto the railway.........but we have been here a while and only see this pop up 2 years ago .....fascinating to watch it grow, nature creating a plant that has balance and grows equally to keep its balance i only wish the rest of it would grow like that .........
