Phlox drummondii ‘Sunset Apricot,

This plant (which I planted in the autumn) has been fantastic flowering prolifically from April to June. Now it’s going over do I pull it out or will it flower again? I get confused by perennial biennial.

Perennial, comes back every year (unless scoffed by slugs of course) biennial, ie foxgloves, roots, leaves first year, flowers second one, unfortunetely often then thats it, bi annual gettit!

Thank you for your comments. The reason why I got confused was apparently I heard that if you don’t pull them out after flowering but just cut them down there is a chance they will bloom again in the summer.

I always grew Phlox drummondii as annuals. I have annual stocks that I grew last year still flowering, as it has been a mild winter.  If you cut off the spent flower heads to stop them setting seed, you should get another flush of flowers.  With the perennial sort you only get one flush of flowers in July/August.

I have some phlox that seem to be growing well each year. I wonder if you can chop back the first flush of flowers and get more.

Its well worth trying on at least a couple of plants.
