Coronilla has flowers a bit like gorse or a very blowsy pea and soft leaves. Potentilla has open, flat daisy like flowers and rather stiffer leaves. I can't actually see from the photo if 3 is either of those. From the colours, I'd say coronilla is likely - blueish foliage - but that may just be my dodgy computer screen

Well Fairygirl and raisingirl it seems Coronilla might be it! I have asked for a better close up of flowers and leaves just to confirm I was completely wrong (pretty much on all counts) but at least it would mean we could give it a good haircut.

Your computer screen is fine raisingirl, I tend to blame my eyes more often than the screen but they are on the bluer side (the leaves, not my eyes).

I agree that picture 3 is a Coronilla shrub. Not all have blue leaves. Some are just dark green. The flowers form a small ring shape and on closer inspection I can see it in the photo, so definitely not a Potentilla.

So it's confirmed then @Borderline, I was wrong on all counts  :)  Good job I don't have to call them by name as I chop them to bits eh?  Good job I have all of you on the end of a piece of cable!
