My rose bush has caught some kind of fungus

Hi
Can anyone help me with identifying what is wrong with my rose bush. The leaves are all being covered in dark splodges. It's really spoiling what is a spectacular rose bush. Can I remedy the problem in any way. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Saj

Rose black spot is a common issue. Some roses are more susceptible to this. In my opinion, black spot is to be tolerated. No amount of any spraying will sort them out. The leaves will be weaker and drop. Just promptly remove them from the base of your plant to avoid risk of re-infection.

Generally, a happy rose will less likely have black spot. The soil in your photo looks very compacted and stale. It needs forking over and then generous layers of well rotted compost and manure worked into the soil making it more rich and moist. This needs to be a yearly task too.

At the moment, it is very likely your soil is baking in heat and not receiving enough water in its roots for them to thrive. Look into making these small changes, and next year, you may see a far better looking rose.

Thanks borderline for your time in replying. I'll take onboard what you have written. I'll attend to the soil as you suggested and leaves tomorrow morning. Here in London, United Kingdom we are just beginning summer so will probably be spells of very dry weather for a couple of months.

As well as picking up any infected leaves it is useful to underplant and/or mulch well in the spring.  As the spores get splashed up onto the rose when it rains.

Thanks Yviestevie. I'll definitely do that for next year.
