Red Robin / Photinia losing all its leaves!

Hello all; we have two Photinias that are well established. Both enjoy a good amount of sun during the day, but not full sun all day. One is protected, the other open to the elements. This past Winter/Spring both have shed most of their leaves... but both have also had fabulous flower/ blossom this year, but now the blossom is fading, both trees are looking bare! Will they recover, or do I need to take any action? Thanks in advance... Lee.

If you could post a photo of them both, it will help a lot. Photinias are quite sensitive to cold weather and wind, and they do need a fair bit of sun to grow well. If planted with lack of back protection, they can lose leaves rapidly and struggle to put on growth.

After flowering, it is a good time to give your shrub a prune back. That should normally encourage it to grow back more rapidly whilst the weather is warm. It has been dry over the whole year. Not good for many shrubs. Even though established, give them a good generous water if no rain for more than 3-4 weeks at this time of year. If you haven't already, a thick layer of mulch around the base will keep the roots cool and less likely to dry out so quickly in hot weather.

Many thanks for your prompt response and suggestions... They have both grown quite significantly recently, so it looks like I’ll be getting the ladders & pruning shears out... They’ve fared well to date, so hopefully they’ll recover. Thanks again. Lee.

I planted a red robin hedge three years back and one plant is doing exactly what you describe, lost all it’s leaves with no apparent reason as all others are growing well.
