Strawberry picking

I have noticed that when I pick my strawberries from the greenhouse and wash them straight away they go mushy.does anybody know what I doing wrong

    We don't wash our strawberries here, because we found they not only went mushy but didn't keep so well.  If there is any soil or whatever mess on them (providing it isn't bird poo or some other horrid dirt - then they would get a quick wipe or wash).  If you feel it is necessary to wash them Jason, can you put the fruit straight onto a dry cloth and gently dab the fruit to dry it?

    I never wash strawberries ... it used to worry OH but he’s tried washing them and realises I’m right. 

    If you you really want to do something you can brush them with a very soft brush or wipe them carefully with a damp tissue ... but washing them spoils them. 

    Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

    Don't wash them they are not washed commercially, if you feel you must wash them wash them just before you use them. It may also be the type you have some strawberries are softer than others and will not keep more than a few hours, they also bruise easily.

    I have now taken them out of the greenhouse was going to do it anyway as I was just trying to get a head start, also it could of been it was at half two when I picked them and it was a hot day.
