Eucalyptus Tree - help with regrowth

Hi all,

This is my first time posting to this forum, having previously been a keen reader/bystander of other threads for some time!

I'm hoping to get some advice on my eucalyptus tree. I attempted to do some maintenance on ours last September (should have enlisted professionals in the first place) and ended up losing the main tall vertical branch, along with all its foliage, thereby leaving a significant gap...

I got a tree surgeon to finish the job who said it’s a fast growing tree and will recover but I still can’t see any signs of new branches.... does anyone know when we can expect to see branches from the trunk? is there’s anything we can do to speed up the growth of branches on our lovely tree?

Thanks,

Steve

It may sound a bit drastic, but if you cut the main trunk down to about 2ft. it will send out new shoots next spring, and you can keep the strongest. I don't see that it will produce a good shape if left as it is.

I had a 100ft ish euclyptus and I had the top 50ft removed.
The following summer it threw out vast amounts of long whippy water shoots from all over the top - it looked awful. Over the next 4-5 years it grew sideways quickly and with an afro-style top it still looked a mess so I had it removed.

fidget's suggestion is a good one, then you can keep it in bounds and get the much prettier juvenile foliage

I totally agree with the above. A neighbour did this a few years ago with a really good result.

I know it sounds drastic @Steve_88 , but l agree with the others. If you just cut it down a bit, whippy growth will come out all over the place as Pete says. The speed that they grow, cutting down will encourage it to grow again, a bit like a bush fire. But for heaven's sake don't set light to it !
