Honeysuckle ‘Goldflame’ not doing too well!?

I have a Honeysuckle - Lonicera x hechrottii ‘Goldflame’. It’s planted against a south facing wall for roughly 5 years. It’s never done too well... powdery mildew every year, sparse leaves and flowering and this years flowers have shrivelled even before flowering.  It’s watered well and mulched in early spring. Any ideas? Perhaps a different location?

I think a west or east facing wall is better. On a south facing wall, I think it is getting too much sun.

They prefer dappled shaded areas, so if it's in full sun, and the soil is light and free draining, they may be struggling.
  • Thanks for responding! Spent most of my day trying to decide whether to move it and also watching where the sun moves around the garden! So thankyou for helping me make my decision! We have a space - east facing and I’ve also read that the roots are best kept cool... so fingers crossed this location will help it thrive.

That might be much better, honeysuckles are woodland plants and prefer dappled shade with their flowers in the sun. They also like soil that retains moisture.
