That looks fab Womble, and you've really increased your vertical growing space by using the arches like that 👍. I see great minds think alike, adding an extra wire up the centre of the arch sides 😉.

Great herb ladder too, must smell lovely when sitting beside it on your patio.
Cute garden helper 😊, pet companions always have a way of sneaking in for a photo opportunity.

The cucumbers are growing very slowly! They’ve got to about 2 foot tall. There are a few flowers, but no cucumbers yet. Everything else is racing away, my tomatoes are at the 5th truss and squash and beans have reached the top of their arches at over 7 foot.

The leaves look ok, they’re just going at glacial pace.

I’m hoping the hot weather forecast next week will give them a boost. Or should I cut my losses and go buy some new cucumber plants from the garden centre?
  • Hi All

I am growing the Burpless variety again this year.I let them grow and only pinch out the top when they get too high and side shoots have already grown up.I usually just let them carry on otherwise.Nothing better than a really fresh Cucumber.

bad joke but do you know snooker players love CUE CUMBERS

The cucumbers have finally got going, and first cucumbers have set. I think I planted them out too early and their growth was checked by the cold weather in late spring. Lesson learned for next year.

Apart from the cucumber, everything else has grown up and over the arches nicely. @Kitty 2 how did your cucumber get on with your arch?

Hi @Womble54. Good to see that the arches are filling out nicely 👍, your garden is looking lovely and lush with all those curcubit leaves 😃🌟.

Sadly my arch is bare 😞. The two cukes I planted either side developed stem rot, following some heavy downpours, so I had to bin them. The good news is that my greenhouse plant is growing well and I've harvested 8 fruits so far 😋.

Of the two courgettes I planted, one survived the rain and has started to develop it's first fruits. The tumbling toms are going bonkers, full of flowers and sprawling out of the boxes. Sungold in the greenhouse is much further advanced with it's fruit trusses though.

I suspect that gh growing is the way to go for me, up north, if I want a half decent crop.

I hope you get a good harvest from your patch Womble, looking forward to seeing your arches dripping with goodies.
    Happy growing 🌻😊.

Shame about your cucumbers. Glad everything’s doing well in the green house. Wish I had room for a GH.

I’ve been out cutting back the nasturtiums. They’re lovely but they were taking over the garden. I found a nice big cucumber hiding under there. It was great. Fingers crossed for lots more.

I am so behind @Womble54 I have three ripe toms,  cucumbers the size of pencils and french beans that have only just germinated and are a foot tall. It's been a bad growing year all round to date.

Hopefully plenty of summer left to catch up.
