Sparrows - what are they after?

The sparrows regularly eat all my cherry plum buds - I never see more than one or  two they've missed. I'd rather have the sparrows.
They're fossicking about in my shrubs now. Are they after insects or buds?
In London. Keen but lazy.

This time of year I think they’re after insects, aphids and grubs for their nestlings.

I saw a sparrow this morning perched on my Kew Gardens rose pecking at the aphids.
    Always welcome!

The poor sparrows can't keep up with aphids in my garden, there are some very fat birds around here.

I had a lupin once that was covered in aphids after i had a week away. I only noticed them because all the leaves were broken on the lupin then I saw the sparrows diving in

I wish the birds here would get 'fossiking', I'm over run with green and black fly. Waiting for more ladybirds and the larvae of soldier beetles to get munching.
