Privet hedge dying

Our garden is surrounded by very established hedges - some just privet and some mixed. In one of the mixed hedges privet plants are dying. They produce very tiny leaves which quickle turn brown and die. There are three patches where this is happening. Any ideas as to cause and/or solution please?
