Rose Pruning - the best time

We have a climbing rose - Crown Princess Marguerite - covering a section of trellis. During the winter storms the trellis became very rickety and it's become obvious that one of the posts has rotted through and the whole thing is very rickety. The rose is 7 years old so it's heavy and large. It's become clear the trellis will have to be replaced but in order to so the rose will need to cut right down. Firstly what time of year is best to do this? Secondly will I kill the rose cutting it right back to almost nothing?

The best time to prune a climbing rose is late autumn or winter.  This advice from the RHS explains - https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=189

That said, you may be able to remove the trellis panel from its posts and then undo or cut all the ties holding the rose and carefully lay it down then replace the posts or posts and add a new trellis panel.   Then you just cut out any bits of old trellis to which the rose is entwined so you can remove it all and then lift the rose back on to its new support and tie it in.

If this all seems too complicated, try reducing the mass of the rose without completely hacking it down and then lay or lean it down out of the way while you erect the new panel and posts.
