Yew hedging

We have some very old yew hedging that is overgrown and needs cutting back (picture 2). We need to reduce the height of the two big towers and narrow them so that we can actually get through them. However, when we tried to do this to one on the other side of the garden we were left with sticks (picture 1). We actually need to cut the sticks back even further but daren't now. The sticks have been like this since November. Have we killed it? Is there anything we can do to reduce the size of the hedging in pic 1 without being left with sticks / without killing it?

Oh that's perfect, spot on and covers ALL the dilemmas we have!! We'll give it a try, cross our fingers and play the long game (which will be a struggle because I relate to your username!) thank you ImpatientGardener!
