Lily bulbs for dummies - some basic questions

B3B3 Posts: 27,505
does the bulb take up nutrients from the soil to come into flower or is everything it needs stored in the bulb?
At what stage does it load up for next year?

The reason I'm asking is that I want to grow some large  lilies in fairly  small pots.  The square topped pots( 5x5 top ) that mature perennials come in . There's plenty of soil around them for now.

    IMO, that is too small.
They are big, greedy bulbs, plus they look better planted in 3's or 5's, again only my opinion.
How can you lie there and think of England

Thanks @punkdoc. An opinion from someone who knows what they're talking about is always welcome.😊
I'll move them into the ground when the nigella's gone over

They grow feeding roots from the part of the stem which is buried under the soil (which also provide support), so be sure to plant them deep (8", 20cm) B3.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
