Japanese Anenome

I've had my plant for two years and this year it's not showing any signs of green only brown "sticks". Is it dead?

Very probably I'm afraid. They should be growing very strongly now. Is it in a pot?
If so, tip it out and inspect it for vine weevil grubs, they might have eaten the roots.

No it's in the ground in the same location that it blossomed beautifully for two years! :(

I would not write this plant off yet. Has a tendency to wander into another location. Not a plant that always stay where you want it. Being a late flowering plant, sometimes leaves can take a while to form.

The leaves on mine are about 2ft high now.
The new growth isn't far below the soil level, I'd have a gentle poke around and see if you can see anything shoot-like, and if not do as Philippa suggests

Thank you for all your suggestions. I'm in New England, so it's been kind of wet and cold up until last week. I think I'll leave it for awhile:)
