White spots on acer leaves

I have recently bought an acer from a garden centre which I planted in my garden. I also bought a smaller version which I have in a pot. Both have developed white spots on the leaves which look like drops of paint and don't rub off. Looking on the internet it sounds as though it's a fungal infection called phyllostica and various remedies are suggested none of which appear to be available in the UK - any suggestions anyone?

Any chance you can post a photo of the two Acers? Interesting description about looking like white paint.

Thanks for taking some photos. I agree with you, it does look like a fungal infection. And your research looks right with Phyllosticta. Not obvious because the leaves are very dark against the pale patches. In advanced infestations, you may see holes in the leaves.

It’s not going to kill your tree, but in order to limit its spread, you will now need to promptly remove any fallen leaves. Unfortunately damp conditions tend to help spread it about. Over the winter I recommend you take away all leaves from under the tree and scrape out the top few inches of soil and lay a new layer. This will help to break the cycle of re-infection.
