Earthing up

Hi I have my main crop spuds in large tubs. Can I earth up with grass clippings? Anyone done this? Is it just s slimy mess and not worth it?

    I always thought you shouldn’t use grass clippings directly as it generates a lot of heat as it decomposes and might cook your spuds. But have no personal experience of it.

    I guess anything that stops the light getting onto the tubers but I wouldn't use grass clippings myself.
